October Games

One of our Mother Goose Time math activities for this month was this cute Sammy Squirrel game. We played with this for a bit during class time and then I gave each of the children their own copy to play with at home.

Even though I teach preschool and the curriculum is targeted towards pre K, everything we do in my class I can also use with my older children to keep them excited about learning. Even my 6th grader loves to pretend to be the teacher and play with her friends and little brother and sister.  Henry asks everyday after he comes home what we did in preschool and can he do it too?

This month we've been having some fun with our MGT lace ups. This is a great activity for fine motor movement. Getting that lace through the little holes requires concentrations and patients.
These particular shapes and beads we use are also great for counting and sorting. During this activity I gave instructions like "sort the buttons into colors. Green, yellow, blue ect. Count how many yellow, blue, etc…" Also, "sort the buttons into shapes. Triangle, square… How many of each are there?"
Giving instructions like this is great listening practice. It requires them to listen and remember. It really doesn't seem like a big deal but, at this age it can be hard to get from point A to point C without forgetting about B. Plus, they are learning some basic math skills at the same time!

Happy teaching friends!
xoxo
